Joy by Jean Patou is a Floral fragrance for women. Joy was launched in 1930. The nose behind this fragrance is Henri Almeras. Top notes are Bulgarian Rose, Ylang-Ylang and Tuberose; middle notes are Jasmine and May Rose; base notes are Musk and Sandalwood. Unfortunately, the death of the perfume line is now official, and you can see it on the Patou (they dropped the Jean) website, clear for everyone to behold (and weep about). Yes, you are reading it well: "Today, Jean Patou's fragrances are no longer in production." Yes, Joy Perfume is still being manufactured. The iconic fragrance, first launched in 1930 by the French luxury goods company Jean Patou, has endured through the years. Despite undergoing ownership changes, with Dior being the current owners, the production of Joy Perfume continues. When I first smelled Jean Patou Joy, I thought, “What’s the big deal?” Here was an iconic fragrance, reputedly the most expensive perfume in the world (this was before Clive Christian hit the scene), and Jackie O’s favorite. To me, though, Joy smelled ho-hum.
Joy by Dior by Dior is a Floral Woody Musk fragrance for women. Joy by Dior was launched in 2018. The nose behind this fragrance is François Demachy. Top notes are Bergamot and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are Jasmine, Grasse Rose, Peach and Cassis; base notes are White Musk, Sandalwood, Cedar, Patchouli and Benzoin. The Joy Eau de Parfum Spray is a timeless classic launched by Jean Patao in 1930. The fragrance opens with a fresh and scintillating concoction of Peach and leafy greens, at the top. The striking scents of Rose, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, and Tuberose lend a sweet, seductive and feminine touch to the middle notes and uplift senses. What I liked less was its whole concept, from a name pilfered from Jean Patou to the core idea. Selecting a star rating for Joy turned out to be challenge. It’s a solid 3 star perfume as far as technique, but as far as originality, it fails massively. While the original, "classic" Joy bottle — so familiar to us today, was designed by Art Déco architest and bottle designer, Louis Süe, Jean Patou himself put his hand to bottle design and, in 1932, produced the alternate Joy bottle shown at the far right.
I love Joy on summer nights. It smells like a sweet Jasmine vine overhead, climbing in the pergola and opening in the dark. Joy feels like a soprano holding the high note so beautifully you swoon. Joy is sweet, strong and almost sharp green but it doesn't hurt.
